The First People’s Principles of Learning are central to my teaching pedagogy and I focused on them in my final practicum. A core component of my poetry unit was having students explore their identities and telling their stories through poetry. We utilized oral storytelling daily and focused on our relationships with ourselves, each other, and the land.

In my Lord of the Flies unit we focused on history and the consequences of our actions. We examined our identities and the values that our society, and us as individuals, believe to be important. By examining these core components that exist in all human connection, students were better able to engage with the content and ideas.

The FPPL are something I connect with deeply and will continue to explore in my pedagogy. I hope that over time my ability to weave them into my pedagogy will become even more nuanced and that they will always be a pillar of the way I practice education.
